Meet Lacey Music

Lacey Music is a landscaper and green witch in the southern United States. She uses garden design, drawing, photography, paint, sculpture, writing, ritual, costume and song as creative mediums.

Festooning

This card was created entirely in the moment with inspiration from the theme of festooning. Those around the circle dance and weave with their energy and their feet. They weave together in mirth, both leaning on and balancing each other. I didn’t know what characters I would draw or what colors I would use before I set them down on paper, only that one foot would be pushing the spiral weaving together and all hands would join to make the circle. There was a great challenge in drawing from this perspective and coming up with all the different characters. Most of them seemed to draw themselves except for one. When I couldn’t fill the last spot I thought I might sneak an image of the goddess in. I thought maybe to include three faced Hekate of the crossroads, or Athena, or Baba Yaga. I started to draw, unsure of what I would make. In the end, once I invited her in, she drew herself.

Skep

The base image for this card is taken from a design I used to create a garden plan for one of my clients. The door of every skep faces another door, or faces the center of the circle of 6. The hives are left transparent save for the reflection of the setting sun on the outside inked in gold with a touch of the shape of the honeycomb floating within the hive, but echoing out.

I started the journey that brought me to the creation of this card almost 20 years ago. Through my mentor, Jackie Rushton, I first learned to talk to plants and to respect the bees. More importantly I was shown that there was a power in sisterhood and connection to the goddess that eventually helped me to heal and to unlock my inner strengths. That knowledge became the foundation for the landscape design work that I do today, and all would be impossible without the communities that I have been a part of, supporting each other.

On Symbolism in the card

The skep is transparent so that you can see how everything inside and outside is connected. Although it is a safe place, it is not separate from. One organism cannot exist without the other. The circle of six within a circle is based on sacred symbols related to the hagia sophia. This is representative of a space that becomes another space, a symbol that becomes another symbol, and of a collection of wisdom from different schools of thought that come together to create something altogether greater than the sum of it’s parts.
